Facebook Marketplace is a brilliant source of cheap furniture, but the “collection only” bit is where deals fall through. Here’s how to use a local man and van to do the pickup smoothly, written by people who do five or ten of these a week around Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset.
Before you commit to buy
- Measure your space. Sofa dimensions, doorway widths, staircase corners. The eternal Friends sofa-pivot meme exists for a reason.
- Ask the seller for the postcode and for photos taken from a few different angles, ideally including the room it’s in (so you can see scale and condition).
- Ask if there’s parking outside and how many flights of stairs.
- Get a quote for the collection before you finalise the buy. Send the two postcodes and a description to a local man and van. Most of us will quote in minutes.
When you’ve agreed the buy
- Pin down a collection date and a time window with both the seller and the carrier.
- Decide how the seller wants paying.
- Give both parties each other’s phone numbers, or your man and van’s.
- Confirm what you’re paying for: the item, the lift down to street level (extra hands needed?), any small dismantling.
Paying the seller
The cleanest options:
- Bank transfer before pickup. Easiest. The seller releases the item to the carrier without cash changing hands.
- Cash to the carrier. You pay the carrier in advance, they pay the seller on the doorstep.
- Cashpoint detour. The carrier swings past an ATM on the way. Small extra fee usually applies.
Avoid PayPal Friends & Family for anything you might want to dispute. Avoid cash you’re hoping the carrier will collect from you “later” – they’ll want it before they head out.
On collection day
- Make sure the seller is in and reachable.
- If you’re going along yourself, great. If not, the carrier handles it.
- Photograph anything that turns out to be different to the listing (extra damage, missing parts) before it’s loaded. Your decision then whether to proceed.
What we can’t do
When we collect on your behalf, we’re a courier, not a quality inspector. We can’t pull the cushions off the sofa and check for stains, or open a wardrobe and confirm none of the runners are missing. That’s on you and the seller to sort out in advance. If you arrive to find the item isn’t as described, that’s your call to make on the spot, but we’ll still need to charge for the journey.
The most common Facebook Marketplace mistakes
- Not measuring the doorway. The biggest reason we have to bring an item back without unloading.
- Assuming “I’ll get my mate to help”. Mates cancel. Then you’re stuck.
- No flexibility on timing. “Today between 6pm and 6.05pm” is hard. “Any time this afternoon” is much cheaper.
- Underestimating dismantling. Beds and wardrobes almost always need to come apart. Factor in time and a small extra cost.
